Die Politik und Geschichte des Staates werden unter anderem durch den Nahostkonflikt bestimmt, der in Teilen bis heute andauert.
Israel wird zu den dichter besiedelten Ländern Asiens gezählt und ist der einzige Staat der Welt, in dem Juden eine Bevölkerungsmehrheit bilden. Die israelische Bevölkerung wird auf über 8,2 Millionen Menschen geschätzt, darunter sind etwa 6,1 Millionen Juden und 1,7 Millionen Araber.
