Thousands protest in Buenos Aires against Milei's diversity policies

Thousands of Argentinians gathered in front of the Casa Rosada, the official seat of the Argentine government, in Buenos Aires to voice their strong opposition to the recent actions taken by President Javier Milei’s administration. The protesters were outraged by Milei’s decision to dissolve the Ministry of Women, Gender, and Diversity, as well as the National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Racism, during his first year in office.

The demonstrators, many of whom carried colorful banners and placards, chanted slogans denouncing the rollback of policies that had been instrumental in promoting and protecting the rights of marginalized communities in Argentina. They argued that Milei’s move represented a significant setback in the country’s efforts to foster a more inclusive and equitable society.

„We will not stand idly by while the hard-won progress on diversity and inclusion is erased,“ said one protester, a member of the LGBTQ+ community. „These institutions were not just symbolic; they provided crucial support and resources to those who faced discrimination and oppression. Their dissolution is a betrayal of our values as a nation.“

The protesters vowed to continue their mobilization and put pressure on the Milei government to reconsider its stance on diversity policies. They expressed concerns that the dismantling of these key institutions could lead to a resurgence of intolerance and discrimination, undermining the hard-fought achievements of the past.

„This is a fight for the very soul of our country,“ declared another demonstrator, a human rights activist. „We cannot allow the clock to be turned back on the hard-won rights and protections for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and racial and ethnic minorities. This is a battle we are determined to win, no matter the cost.“

As the crowd continued to swell, the atmosphere in the plaza remained peaceful but resolute, with the protesters vowing to maintain their vigil until the government responded to their demands.
