Trump says US, India to start negotiations on trade gap

During a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 summit in France, US President Donald Trump announced that the two countries have agreed to start negotiations to address the long-standing trade imbalance between the United States and India.

Trump stated that the trade deficit, which has been a contentious issue between the two nations, is something that both leaders are committed to resolving through constructive dialogue and negotiations. He noted that the trade gap has been a „long-running disparity“ that needs to be addressed in a fair and equitable manner.

The president expressed optimism about the potential for a successful outcome, stating that he and Prime Minister Modi have a „wonderful relationship“ and are confident that they can find a mutually beneficial solution to the trade issues. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the economic ties between the world’s two largest democracies, which he sees as a crucial component of the broader strategic partnership between the United States and India.

Both leaders acknowledged the need to address concerns on both sides and work towards a more balanced trade relationship. The upcoming negotiations are expected to cover a wide range of trade-related matters, including tariffs, market access, intellectual property rights, and investment opportunities.

As the world’s two fastest-growing major economies, the United States and India have significant economic and strategic interests in enhancing their bilateral trade and investment ties. The successful conclusion of these trade negotiations could pave the way for further deepening of the Indo-US partnership, which has gained momentum in recent years under the leadership of President Trump and Prime Minister Modi.
