Researchers in Germany have filmed rats hunting and eating bats – raising fresh fears about the spread of new coronaviruses. The study, published this month in Global Ecology and Conservation, shows rats ambushing roosting bats inside caves in northern Germany. Scientists warn the behaviour could allow rats to act as a ‚bridging host‘ for bat-borne viruses, potentially increasing the risk of transmission to humans.
