Astronomers in Chile have captured a haunting image of a vast nebula shaped like a bat gliding through space. The so-called ‚Cosmic Bat‘, located 10,000 light-years away between the constellations Circinus and Norma, glows red from newborn stars heating surrounding gas. Captured with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope’s 268-megapixel OmegaCAM in Chile, the eerie formation appeared just in time for Halloween.
