An experienced 74-year-old mariner called emergency services with his handheld satellite communicator after his boat was severely damaged in stormy conditions 489 miles off the coast of Oregon on May 26. The US Coast Guard responded, sending a helicopter and contacting nearby cruise ship Silver Whisper for assistance.
