The Stelvio glacier in northern Italy, Europe’s last major high-altitude summer ski resort, has been forced to shut its pistes after persistent heatwaves, a lack of overnight freezing and frequent thunderstorms left snow cover too degraded to guarantee safe skiing conditions.
