Residents in the Kanarya neighbourhood of Kucukcekmece, Istanbul, kept a tense half-hour vigil beneath a seven-storey apartment block on June 23 after a cat named Kara Bela became stranded on a top-floor window ledge while its owner was away. Shopkeeper Hamza Ayaz spotted the stricken animal and grabbed the large umbrella from his nearby ice cream freezer, later handing it to neighbour Nezir Gulec who positioned it beneath the falling cat just in time to cushion its landing.
