Scientists using the world’s largest solar telescope have recorded the first direct observations of tiny whirlpools of superheated plasma swirling across the surface of the Sun, potentially solving one of astronomy’s greatest mysteries — why the Sun’s outer atmosphere is more than a hundred times hotter than its visible surface.
