Der Senegal ist ein Staat in Westafrika. Sein Territorium ist etwa halb so groß wie Deutschland; es erstreckt sich von den Ausläufern der Sahara im Norden, wo das Land an Mauretanien grenzt, bis an den Beginn des tropischen Feuchtwaldes im Süden, wo die Nachbarn Guinea und Guinea-Bissau sind, sowie von der kühlen Atlantikküste im Westen in die heiße Sahel-Region an der Grenze zu Mali. Die südlichen Landesteile des französischsprachigen Senegal, die Casamance, werden durch den tief in den Osten reichenden englischsprachigen Kleinstaat Gambia abgetrennt.
Das Gebiet des Senegal ist bereits seit dem 12. Jahrhundert ein Teil der islamischen Welt und auch heute bekennen sich mehr als 90 % der 12 Millionen Einwohner des Landes zum Islam. Nachdem die Region von mehreren afrikanischen Reichen beherrscht wurde, wurde sie im Jahre 1895 zur ersten französischen Kolonie in Afrika. Am 20. August 1960 wurde Senegal unabhängig; es behielt ein Mehrparteiensystem bei und wurde zu einem der wenigen demokratischen Staaten auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent.
